Bothwell, settled in the 1820s by Scottish graziers, still retains its nineteenth-century ambience. The colonial charms of Bothwell are; Australasian Golf Museum, Nant: a whisky distillery in Australia's oldest working flour mill, Ratho Farm: Australia's oldest golf course, Ross Baker: Australia's traditional golf clubmaker... all based around one of Tasmania's prettiest pioneering villages. The area boasts legendary trout fishing. Fish for world-renowned wild brown and rainbow trout in Arthurs Lake and the Great Lake as well as in Bronte, Little Pine, Penstock and Dee Lagoons. Who were the Young Irelanders? Where did they live? Which bushrangers roamed the area? Bothwell's cemetery gravestones depict the hardships of settlement and provide great interest for many historians and genealogists. In the sub-alpine Central Plateau, hydro-electric power stations capture water from some of the 3000 lakes and tarns. Waddamana power station opened in 1916 and is now a museum.
